The Issue

The school board of Malden Highschool has decided to cut band entirely. For many students, band is not just a class, it is where they find purpose, belonging, and identity. At Malden, the band program has already proven how meaningful it is. Events like the annual winter concert bring students, families, and the entire community together, creating moments of pride, connection, and tradition that cannot be replaced.  Students themselves have shared how impactful this program is. Some have said the band community introduced them to “some of the best people” they’ve ever met, stating “Band isn’t just a class, it’s a family” as well as  band being the only class that “made school worth it” while others described joining band as “the best decision” they ever made because it allowed them to grow creatively and personally. These are not small statements, this is the kind of impact that shapes lives. Malden High School is a relatively small school, with only around 400 students. Programs like band are essential in schools like ours because they give students something to belong to. When opportunities are limited, cutting one of the strongest sources of community and engagement takes away more than just music, it takes away connection, motivation, and a reason for some students to even want to come to school. Band teaches discipline, teamwork, and resilience in ways that traditional classes cannot. It gives students a creative outlet, something positive to focus on, and a place where they feel seen and valued. For some, it is the only thing keeping them involved in school and out of negative situations. Cutting this program would not just remove an elective, it would silence a space where students grow, express themselves, and feel like they matter.
