Stop the sale of alcohol at Metro Gould Street
The Issue
STOP selling all alcohol products at Metro Gould Street Toronto.
Since Metro Gould Street began selling alcohol, there has been a sharp increase in public intoxication, public urination and defecation, open and discarded alcohol containers, loitering, discarded needles, littering, and violence among street-involved people within the Gould/Dalhousie/Mutual Streets neighbourhood.
Intoxicated, street-involved persons frequently purchase alcohol from Metro Gould Street when the store opens (AT 7:00AM - SEVEN DAYS A WEEK!), loiter in public and private spaces immediately around the store, become more intoxicated, purchase more alcohol from Metro Gould Street, and repeat throughout the day. It is commonplace to witness these individuals pass out where they have been seated drinking for the day. In some cases, individuals consume substances to the point of medical distress and EMS is required to attend the scene.
Metro Gould Street employees have faced violence in-store when attempting to serve or, in rare circumstances, refuse service to intoxicated street-involved persons. Outside the store local residents, children, pets, and visitors are exposed to violence, property damage, and public urination and defecation on sidewalks, stairwell exits, and other public spaces.
The sale of alcohol is also hurting small business in the area who are at increased financial risk due to the pandemic. Grocery stores are posting year-over-year increases to profits, while local small businesses continue to suffer and close up shop.
Metro College Park (Yonge & Gerrard Streets) agreed to stop selling alcohol. Residents and small businesses in the College Park area successfully pressured Metro College Park to stop selling alcohol to address the same issues we are experiencing from the sale of alcohol at Metro Gould Street.
There has been no response from Metro Gould Street or the Alcohol & Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) in response to numerous complaints of serving intoxicated persons and the associated negative impacts on the neighbourhood.
