DALAI LAMA, TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE SEXUAL MISCONDUCT OF TIBETAN BUDDHIST LAMAS

DALAI LAMA, TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE SEXUAL MISCONDUCT OF TIBETAN BUDDHIST LAMAS
The Issue
Her Tibetan Buddhist teacher has beaten her, she says. He humiliated her publicly in his centre in Switzerland. He also sexually abused her three times in the period between 2007 and 2013. She experienced severe mental problems, which she had to seek professional help to overcome.
Now together with other abuse victims, she wants to call the Dalai Lama to be accountable for those teachers he endorses that abuse others. He should take responsibility for the kind of sexual misconduct by these teachers that produces bodily injury and emotional scarring for life.
SOGYAL LAKAR, Founder Rigpa
SAKYONG MIPHAM, Head of Shambhala
RIGDZIN NAMKHA, Buddhist teacher
LAMA CHOEDAK RINPOCHE, Head of the Tibetan Buddhist Society of Canberra
GANGTENG TULKU, Head of Gangteng Monastery, Bhutan
TULKU LOBSANG, Buddhist Teacher and Head of Nangten Menlang
TENZIN DHONDEN, Emissary of the Dalai Lama
These are only a few of the Tibetan Buddhist teachers whose harmful behaviour has been made known. Are there more of them? How will it stop? When will it end?
Over the decades, the Dalai Lama attracted people to false leaders by visiting their centres and establishments, thus validating them. The visits make the Dalai Lama almost a protector and promoter of these false teachers.
According to Buddhist practitioner and researcher Rob Hogendoorn, who has over the years investigated abuse cases of victims of 23 spiritual leaders of Dutch Buddhist communities, "I think the Dalai Lama underestimates the problem of sexual abuse and also the consequences of that abuse."
As their spiritual head, the Dalai Lama should be held accountable for the misconduct of Tibetan Buddhist Lamas.
