Metal Detectors in All Tennessee K-12 Schools

The Issue

Only 22 days into this new year, and just two years after the tragic Covenant School shooting, Tennessee schools have once again experienced the horror of a school shooting. How many more lives must be lost before meaningful action is taken?

Our democracy is founded on the principle of a government “for the people, by the people.” Today, the people of this great state are calling on lawmakers to implement immediate and comprehensive changes to the security protocols in all K-12 schools. It has become evident that the presence of a School Resource Officer (SRO) is not enough to prevent these tragedies.

As someone who grew up in Brooklyn in the 1990s, I know firsthand the impact of crime and the importance of safety in schools. Crime rates were high, and school shootings were not uncommon. Each morning as I entered my high school, I walked through a metal detector. That metal detector gave me a sense of safety, knowing that weapons would not make their way into our classrooms. It also served as a deterrent, sending a clear message that no one could bring a weapon hidden in their backpack and threaten our learning environment. It worked then, and it can work now.

We must prioritize prevention over reaction. Metal detectors in schools are a proven tool to detect threats before they become irreversible tragedies. They provide a layer of security that cannot be achieved through personnel alone. By installing metal detectors at all entrances of Tennessee’s schools, we can protect our children, teachers, and staff, and make our schools a safe space for learning once again.

The time to act is now. Let’s honor the memories of those we’ve lost by ensuring that no parent has to receive the heart-wrenching call that their child will not be coming home from school. Let’s ensure that no teacher has to shield their students from danger while fearing for their own lives.

We urge you to mandate metal detectors in all Tennessee K-12 schools and allocate the necessary funding to implement this change immediately. The safety of our children and our communities depends on your leadership.

Sign this petition and stand with us in demanding action. Let’s detect threats before they strike.

Together, we can save lives.
