Meta, Stop Exploiting Us: Reward Facebook Users for Their Time and Data!

Meta, Stop Exploiting Us: Reward Facebook Users for Their Time and Data!
The Issue
When I first joined Facebook, it felt like a revolutionary tool—a place to connect, to be seen, to be heard. Like millions of people, I used the platform to share thoughts, memories, achievements, and opinions. It became a part of my daily life. But over the years, that excitement slowly turned into disappointment, and now, into frustration and a sense of betrayal.
I’ve spent countless hours on Facebook—not just passively scrolling, but engaging, creating, contributing. And like most people, I gave Facebook my time, my attention, and most importantly, my data. But in return? Nothing. No rewards, no benefits, not even recognition. Just more ads, more tracking, and more policies that favor profit over people.
Meanwhile, Meta—the company behind Facebook—has become one of the most powerful corporations on earth. In 2023 alone, Meta generated over $134 billion in revenue, with advertising making up more than 97% of that income. Who made that possible? Us—the users. Our clicks, our photos, our videos, our messages, our private moments—everything we share fuels their system. Without us, Facebook would be worthless.
And yet, only a tiny fraction of users—advertisers, influencers, and large businesses—receive any kind of return. The rest of us? We’re locked out of monetization, left out of profit-sharing, and too often locked out of our accounts entirely for vague reasons, forced to hand over personal documents like IDs with no clear explanation or path to appeal. It’s a system built on surveillance, exploitation, and digital inequality.
This is more than just bad policy—it’s an ethical failure.
We’ve reached a point where the internet is no longer just a place for connection; it’s a marketplace. And in this marketplace, our time, behavior, and attention have become some of the most valuable commodities in the world. If we’re contributing to a system that generates billions, why aren’t we being compensated?
Here are a few facts that highlight the scale of this issue:
Facebook has nearly 3 billion monthly active users.
The average person spends over 2 hours a day on social media, much of it on Meta platforms.
Yet fewer than 1% of users are eligible for monetization tools like Facebook Stars or bonuses.
Meta’s net profit in 2023 was over $39 billion, largely driven by selling access to the data we provide—for free.
Let me ask you: would you work every day for a company that made billions off your labor… and never paid you?
Because that’s exactly what’s happening now. Meta has turned our time into their income. They’ve built a business that profits from our participation but excludes us from the value we create. It’s time to demand something better.
This petition calls on Meta and CEO Mark Zuckerberg to:
Implement a universal user reward system—through digital perks, gift cards, or payment for time and engagement.
Open up monetization tools to all active users, not just a select few.
Reform account locking and ID verification policies, making them fair, transparent, and respectful of user rights.
Recognize and reward digital labor—because our attention is valuable, and our data is powerful.
This isn’t just about compensation. It’s about dignity, fairness, and the right to be treated as more than a number in an algorithm.
We're no longer willing to be exploited. We’re no longer willing to build a platform for free while Meta earns billions off our backs. This is a call for justice in the digital age—for every Facebook user who has given and never received, who has contributed and never been credited.
If you've ever felt dismissed, locked out, invisible, or used by a platform you helped build, then this petition is for you. Let’s raise our voices and demand the system change. Let's demand that Meta acknowledge us not as data points, but as people with real value.
Please sign and share this petition. Together, we can shift the balance of power. Together, we can demand digital fairness and accountability.
