El problema
Me llamo Nacho Montero. Soy periodista y escritor, y desde hace muchos años una parte importante de mi trabajo ha estado ligada al deporte. He escrito varios libros sobre su historia y sus protagonistas, dos de ellos con un claro fin social, porque siempre he entendido que el deporte es mucho más que la búsqueda de la victoria: es una escuela de valores, una herramienta de integración y una fuente de inspiración para millones de personas.
Precisamente por esa convicción nace esta petición.
No me mueve ninguna animadversión hacia Lionel Messi. Al contrario. Lo considero uno de los mejores futbolistas de todos los tiempos y creo que su legado deportivo es incuestionable. Nada de lo que aquí expongo pretende cuestionar una trayectoria que ya forma parte de la historia del deporte.
Precisamente porque es una figura admirada en todo el mundo, considero que también representa algo que trasciende a sus éxitos deportivos.
Los Premios Princesa de Asturias no reconocen únicamente el talento o las victorias. También distinguen la excelencia, la ejemplaridad y aquellos valores que convierten el deporte en un instrumento de convivencia, respeto y unión entre las personas.
Los acontecimientos relacionados con la final del Mundial de 2026 han generado un intenso debate público y una amplia repercusión internacional. Con independencia de las conclusiones que puedan derivarse de los procedimientos correspondientes, considero que esa controversia ha proyectado una sombra sobre un galardón cuyo prestigio, a mi juicio, debe situarse siempre por encima de cualquier persona.
Al conocer el Reglamento de los Premios Princesa de Asturias descubrí que la Fundación no contempla la posibilidad de retirar un premio una vez concedido. Es decir, si una situación sobrevenida pudiera afectar al prestigio del galardón, la institución carece de un mecanismo reglamentario para revisarlo. No cuestiono esa norma; simplemente constato esa realidad. Precisamente por ello, esta petición no va dirigida a la Fundación.
No le pido a Lionel Messi que renuncie a sus títulos ni al reconocimiento que millones de aficionados le admiran, al igual que yo, por su extraordinaria carrera deportiva.
Le solicito únicamente que valore un gesto voluntario que, en mi opinión, contribuiría a preservar el prestigio de una de las instituciones culturales y sociales más respetadas de España y del mundo hispano.
Si decidiera renunciar voluntariamente al Premio Princesa de Asturias de los Deportes, su legado futbolístico permanecería intacto. Nadie dejaría de reconocer todo lo que ha aportado al deporte. Pero, además, enviaría un mensaje de respeto hacia una institución cuyo prestigio pertenece a toda la sociedad.
Creo que las grandes leyendas también son recordadas por las decisiones que toman cuando tienen la oportunidad de fortalecer las instituciones que representan.
Por todo ello, pido respetuosamente a Lionel Messi que valore la renuncia voluntaria al Premio Princesa de Asturias de los Deportes como un gesto de responsabilidad institucional y de respeto hacia los valores que este galardón simboliza.

The Sports Award, in particular, recognises not only sporting success but also the values that sport is expected to represent.
Following the events surrounding the 2026 FIFA World Cup Final, I believe a legitimate public debate has emerged regarding the symbolic significance of this distinction. Regardless of differing opinions about those events, I believe the prestige of such an institution should always remain above any individual.
After reviewing the official regulations of the Princess of Asturias Awards, I learned that there is no provision allowing the Foundation to revoke an award once it has been granted. For that reason, this petition is not directed at the Princess of Asturias Foundation, but respectfully and exclusively at Lionel Messi himself.
I am not asking him to renounce his achievements, his World Cup title or the admiration of millions of football supporters around the world.
I am simply asking him to consider a voluntary gesture which, in my opinion, would reinforce the prestige of one of Spain's most respected cultural and institutional distinctions.
Should Lionel Messi voluntarily relinquish the Princess of Asturias Award for Sports, his place among football's greatest legends would remain completely unchanged. His achievements would continue to inspire generations. At the same time, such a decision could be interpreted as an exceptional demonstration of respect for an institution whose prestige belongs to society as a whole.
I believe that the greatest sporting legends are remembered not only for what they achieve on the field, but also for the example they set beyond it.
For these reasons, I respectfully invite Lionel Messi to consider voluntarily relinquishing the Princess of Asturias Award for Sports.
