Mesquite Needs a Community Police Oversight Board

Mesquite Needs a Community Police Oversight Board
The Issue
To continue building trust between the citizens of Mesquite and the Mesquite Police Department, Mesquite needs a Community Police Oversight Board.
In 2017, two Mesquite men of color were shot, both from behind by police officers. The murder of George Floyd accentuates how Mesquite Citizens want to see a change in our policies for the Mesquite Police Department. We want to have a voice and we want to have a more trusting relationship with our police officers.
Our community held a march on June 6, 2020. At this rally, Deputy Mayor Pro-Tem and Council Member Daniel Aleman pledge to support a Police Community Oversight Board. This pledge to promote trust between our citizens and police officers was a pledge of hope, understanding, and forward-thinking for the future of Mesquite.
We are asking the Mesquite City Council to form and fund a Community Police Oversight Board. This board should have independent authority to investigate allegations of misconduct by The Mesquite Police Department (MPD), offer and implement remedies to police accountability, and issue advisory and resolution reports to institutions involved in public safety and the administration of justice. The MCPOB must have access to all critical pieces of information, evidence, and personnel. Additionally, the MCPOB should have authority review policies, training, and other systematic issues prior to implementation. Finally, the MCPOB will need to have outreach and support to build citizen confidence in the MCPOB.
