Mesa Verda high school changes for the school Policies And Strict rules Created
The Issue
Community members of Mesa Verda our school faces several concerns that warrant administrative review and action. First, the school gates are frequently locked during class hours, which prevents students from accessing restrooms even when they have a valid hall pass. This practice can cause discomfort and negatively impact students’ ability to concentrate and perform academically. Second, there are instances when the school nurse is unavailable, leaving sick students with no option but to leave school without appropriate medical assessment or support. Ensuring that the nurse is consistently present throughout the school day is essential for student health and safety. Third, many teachers progress through lessons at a pace that does not accommodate varying learning needs. It would be beneficial for teachers to allocate at least fifteen minutes to thoroughly explain each lesson before moving forward, particularly in mathematics, where foundational understanding is crucial. Finally, current graduation restrictions—such as prohibiting balloons, personalized decorations, or music limit students’ ability to celebrate their achievements creatively and meaningfully. Allowing modest customization would help make the ceremony a more inclusive and memorable experience. Addressing these issues will strengthen our school environment, promote student well-being, and demonstrate a commitment to fairness and academic success. also “We believe students should be allowed to play a short music clip, personalize their walk, and express themselves respectfully during graduation, because it’s a once‑in‑a‑lifetime moment that deserves celebration, not unnecessary restrictions.” “What we’re asking for isn’t meant to be cruel or disrespectful toward the principal. This isn’t about tearing someone down it’s about standing up for a school environment that feels fair, supportive, and human. Right now, the rules and policies we’re living under are so strict that they take away our voices, our joy, and the freedom to celebrate the milestones we’ve worked so hard for. When leadership creates policies that make students feel unheard, controlled, or dismissed, it becomes impossible to ignore the impact. We’re not calling for change out of anger, but out of hope hope for a school where students can express themselves, where graduation feels like a celebration instead of a punishment, and where the rules reflect understanding instead of fear. If leadership cannot or will not soften these harsh policies, then replacing that leadership becomes less of an attack and more of a necessary step toward creating a school environment that truly supports its students.” “One of the most difficult parts of our school experience is how often the campus is locked during class time. Students shouldn’t feel trapped or restricted in a place that’s supposed to support their learning. When gates are locked and certain bathrooms outside the main halls are unavailable, it creates real problems students can’t reach the nearest restroom, can’t move safely between areas, and sometimes feel anxious because they’re physically blocked in. Yes, there are bathrooms inside the hallways, but that doesn’t help the students who are in other parts of campus when the gates are shut. No student should have to choose between being late to class or being uncomfortable because they can’t access basic needs. These policies may be meant for safety, but the way they’re enforced ends up making students feel controlled instead of protected. We’re asking for a change not out of disrespect, but because every student deserves a school environment where they can move freely, feel safe, and have their basic needs met without unnecessary barriers.” This is all I want for Mesa Verda.
