Sending you wellness wishes + gratitude!
Thank you and close to 5,000 people to date for signing and sharing our plea to Merriam Webster's editor to remove negative definitions for "black" and "dark" (and their iterations) that endanger the lives of black and dark-skinned people of all ages by creating a deadly institutionally supported bias against blackness and darkness.
We just witnessed a horrific attack on our nation - and the allowance of it - partially due to a generational irrational bias in our vocabulary (which informs ideology) that teaches us to fear Blackness and protect Whiteness at all costs. We are at an important crossroads as a species. We have the opportunity to evolve healthfully toward a world that heals hearts, builds humanity, prioritizes empathy, and embraces mental care.
I have included an article regarding research published in the December 2020 Journal of Experimental Child Psychology regarding the unwitting passing down of racial bias and its costly results. We can begin to evolve by eliminating colorist dictionary definitions that we teach our toddlers and maintain as implicit bias in our institutions.
Please continue to share this request to remove the deadly implicit bias against "black" and "dark" that Merriam Webster (and other dictionaries) seed into our words and thoughts.
Thank you again and please take care.
