Mental Health for Dogs : Make Diwali Safe for Every Being

Mental Health for Dogs : Make Diwali Safe for Every Being
The Issue
Two years ago, I adopted Viya, a gentle, loving Golden Retriever who has filled our lives with warmth and joy. But last Diwali, I saw her cry, tremble, and pant in terror as firecrackers exploded through the night. It wasn’t celebration. She was unable to eat, sleep, or understand what was happening. That night changed how I saw our festivals.
Viya’s story is not unique. Thousands of pets, community dogs, and birds experience extreme distress every festive season. The deafening blasts cause panic, heart irregularities, and trauma not only in animals but in infants, elderly citizens, and those with mental health sensitivities. This is a public and animal mental health concern. We are not calling for a ban on celebration. We are calling for responsible celebration.
We demand:
- Fixed firecracker hours during Diwali week to reduce unpredictable noise.
- Designated Firecracker Zones in Every City: Controlled, monitored open spaces where citizens can safely celebrate without causing widespread noise trauma.
- Silent Celebration Zones near pet-heavy neighborhoods, hospitals, and shelters.
- Promotion of low-noise, eco-friendly firecrackers with public labeling.
- Temporary helplines and safe shelters for animals during Diwali.
- Public awareness campaigns on the mental health impact of firecrackers.
This campaign #MentalHealthForDogs stands for compassion, not conflict.
Festivals should unite us, not terrify those who can’t speak for themselves.
Because there is no celebration in causing harm.
Sign and share to help make Diwali safe for every being.
