A major new study published in JAMA Internal Medicine shows a sharp decline in mothers’ mental health from 2016 to 2023. In just a few years, the number of mothers reporting poor mental health jumped from 1 in 20 to nearly 1 in 12. Single moms and those with kids on Medicaid were hit the hardest.

This didn’t start with the pandemic. Rising housing costs, child care bills, food prices, and the constant pressure to do it all without help are breaking mothers down. Therapy is hard to access and even harder to afford. Many moms are burned out, isolated, and barely hanging on.

We are not okay. And we are not alone.

This is a national crisis. Mothers need affordable mental health care, paid leave, quality child care, and real support.

Not more pressure.
