Menlo Atherton H.S. Teacher Discrimination
Menlo Atherton H.S. Teacher Discrimination
The Issue
My daughter, Funaki Vunipola, has been experiencing a distressing situation at Menlo Atherton High School. Since the start of the school year, she has faced bullying and humiliation from her teacher, Ms. Angelone. Despite my efforts to vocalize these concerns, it seems as though no staff member takes student complaints seriously. Funaki had previously requested to switch out of Ms. Angelone’s class due to this abusive treatment, but little has been done to address the issue. Funaki has lost a big interest in attending school since last year due to this abusive treatment and for this reason she has been so behind with school work. She was able to catch up with all her classes and pass except for Ms. Angeline’s English class.
This situation is not only affecting my daughter. There is a history of similar complaints about Ms. Angelone’s behavior towards other students, reflecting a broader pattern of racism and prejudice. It's alarming to see such behavior persist in a learning environment meant to nurture and support young minds.
We must take immediate action to protect students from this toxic environment. I am currently in the process of submitting an official complaint form. However, it's crucial that the school administration recognizes this issue and takes the necessary steps to ensure a safe and inclusive environment for all students, free from bullying and discrimination.
I urge the Atherton community to rally together to support immediate corrective measures. The welfare and mental health of our students should be a priority, not dealt with disregard or delay.

Role Models and Mentors:Minority teachers can serve as valuable role models and mentors, offering guidance and support to minority students.
Culturally Responsive
Teaching:Teachers of color are more likely to embrace culturally responsive teaching practices, which can be highly beneficial for students of color.
In California, AB 1806, enacted in 2014, requires school districts to accept and award full or partial credit for coursework satisfactorily completed by homeless students at other schools. This applies even if the student did not complete the entire course. The law also allows homeless students to continue attending their school of origin through graduation, even if they no longer qualify as homeless. Additionally, AB 1806 provides exemptions from district graduation requirements that exceed state standards for students who have experienced homelessness.
