Memphis - Loud Church Bell Recordings in Vollintine-Evergreen

The Issue

Late last year, after over 20 years of quiet, the St. Theresa
- The Little Flower Church on Jackson Avenue began using
a loudspeaker system to broadcast the sound of recorded
multiple bells. The recorded bells are amplified at a high volume, and play
frequently all day, every day. The bell recordings play every half
hour (and sometimes, every 15 minutes), from 8 AM to 9 PM, and
vary from single chimes to extended pieces of music…all at a
volume that neighbors in the immediate area consider
disruptive.

The church is aware that the bell recordings are disturbing the
peace of the neighborhood. Individuals and groups who have
approached the church to ask for a compromise have been
rebuffed repeatedly. The church appears to not want to consider
how the neighborhood feels about this disturbance.

We are not against the church, and we are not anti-religion. This is not a religious matter for us, and we have no anti-religious agenda. This is simply about unnecessary noise in our community, which impacts our peaceful enjoyment of our homes.

We are your neighbors here in Vollintine-Evergreen. We choose to
live here…we rent here, we own our homes here, and we pay our
taxes here. And we all have something in common…when we are
home, we want to relax in peace, and to enjoy our homes and
property in relative quiet.

If you find these amplified bell recordings to be loud and
disruptive too, please join us. Sign our petition here at change.org, or reach out to ve.neighborhood@gmail.com for more information.
