MUN has recently announced that all labs will be in-person for the 2022 Winter Semester despite the Omicron variant surge in Newfoundland and Labrador. We do not feel safe or that MUN has our safety in mind with this decision, nor do we feel that MUN is adequately following public health recommendations. Labs have many people in any given lab at any given time, and while MUN has many preventative measures in place, they have not provided information on what will happen should an outbreak occur, leading to students not feeling comfortable to attend in-person. We are also asking for reassurance that students will not be penalized for absence from laboratories, as it has been stated that students will be expected to make them up on their own time should they have to isolate or contract the virus. Given that classes are remote, we are asking that MUN make labs remote as well for the time being, with the decision being reassessed the same as remote classes being reassessed before January 31, 2022. We are asking that the safety and concerns of the students, faculty, and staff members be considered. Omicron is much more contagious than previous variants of the virus, and MUN’s lack of a solid plan is unacceptable
