#FIX MD ROUTE 3

The Issue

Now is the time to fix and improve Maryland Route 3 in Bowie, Crofton, Gambrills, and the Millersville Corridor. Route 3 originated and was built in 1927 under the Maryland State Road Commission. In the 1950s, Maryland Route 3 was officially designated as a state road.

What has remained consistent? The lack of improvements to the Maryland Route 3 infrastructure. Current traffic flow from other jurisdictions and local traffic with the road engineering and design have led to unsafe conditions. There are concerns of speed, flow, and density of traffic on Maryland Route 3.

A few facts that you need to be aware of about Maryland Route 3:

- Maryland Route 3 is a state road maintained by the Maryland State Highway Administration. A state road needs a state response and solution.
- Maryland Route 3 impacts all of Anne Arundel County. It is the main highway from Prince George’s County into Anne Arundel and is a main thoroughfare connecting to every major highway in Anne Arundel County.
- Traffic congestion impacts our local and state economy. Anne Arundel County has the largest employer in the state of Maryland at Fort Meade/NSA, has numerous larger employers, and the U.S. Naval Academy is located in Anne Arundel County.
- Traffic flow and safety on Maryland Route 3 is concerning. Accidents are increasing on Maryland Route 3 and there is a lack of pedestrian access near shopping and commercial districts.

What do we need to do to impact change to improve Maryland Route 3?
Since Maryland Route 3 is a state road, we need to push Governor Hogan and our state representatives in the Maryland General Assembly, and the Maryland State Highway Administration to take action now.

Suggested improvements are both short and long term. Considerations include:

- Improve Traffic Light and Signal Synchronization
- Improve ingress and egress on and off of Maryland Route 3 (Example: Trimming trees and increasing vision of drivers making turns)
- Widening Maryland Route 3 Lanes and Shoulder (Example: Adding an additional Northbound and Southbound Lane on Maryland Route 3 between St. Stephens Church Road and Millersville Road)
