Members of Congress: Protect Our Public Lands
The Issue
SUBJECT: Members of Congress: Protect Our Public Lands
Members of Congress,
We The People are writing to urge you to stand firmly in defense of our public lands, national parks, reservations, and wildlife habitats. These lands are a national trust—not a resource to be pillaged for short-term economic gain. They belong to the American people, to the wildlife that depends upon them, and to future generations who deserve the opportunity to inherit healthy, thriving ecosystems.
Our national parks and public lands protect some of the most extraordinary landscapes and wildlife habitats in the country. Reservations and lands of cultural significance are also deeply connected to the history, sovereignty, traditions, and well-being of Indigenous peoples. These places deserve protection, respect, and responsible stewardship—not exploitation.
The reckless extraction of natural resources can have consequences that last for generations. Mining, drilling, logging, destructive development, and other forms of resource exploitation can destroy and fragment wildlife habitat, disrupt migration routes, contaminate water, degrade soil, and permanently alter ecosystems. Wildlife cannot simply relocate when its habitat is destroyed. The loss of one species can affect countless others, disrupting the delicate systems that sustain entire ecosystems.
What harms wildlife ultimately harms people as well.
Healthy forests, wetlands, rivers, oceans, and grasslands provide clean water, clean air, fertile soil, flood protection, carbon storage, food, recreation, and countless other benefits essential to human life. When these natural systems are degraded, communities pay the price. Pollution threatens drinking water and food sources. Habitat destruction contributes to biodiversity loss. Deforestation and wetland destruction can increase flooding and erosion. The loss of healthy ecosystems leaves communities more vulnerable to extreme weather and other environmental pressures.
We must stop treating the destruction of natural resources as an acceptable trade-off for short-term profits. Once a mountain is stripped, a watershed contaminated, an old-growth forest destroyed, or a critical wildlife habitat fragmented beyond recovery, no amount of money can fully restore what was lost.
We The People therefore call on Congress to:
* **Protect and strengthen** the laws and regulations safeguarding national parks, public lands, reservations, and critical wildlife habitat.
* **Oppose efforts to sell, transfer, lease, or otherwise sacrifice protected public lands** for short-term financial or political interests.
* **Ensure responsible management of natural resources** that prioritizes long-term ecological health over immediate extraction and profit.
* **Protect clean water, clean air, and healthy ecosystems** for the communities and wildlife that depend upon them.
* **Preserve wildlife corridors and critical habitat** so that species have the space and connectivity necessary to survive.
* **Respect Indigenous sovereignty, treaty rights, cultural resources, and sacred lands** and meaningfully include Indigenous communities in decisions affecting their lands and resources.
* **Hold industries accountable** for environmental damage and ensure that taxpayers and local communities are not left to pay the cost of pollution and destruction.
* **Invest in conservation, restoration, and climate resilience** so that damaged ecosystems can recover and remain healthy for future generations.
Members of Congress have a responsibility that extends beyond the next election or the next budget cycle. You are entrusted with decisions that will shape this country for decades and, in some cases, centuries to come.
Please remember that public lands are more than acreage on a map and natural resources are more than commodities with a price tag. They are living ecosystems. They are wildlife habitat. They are sources of clean water and clean air. They are places of cultural and spiritual significance. They are part of our national heritage and our children's future.
**We cannot consume our way to prosperity by destroying the natural systems that make life possible.**
I ask you to protect these lands—not merely for their economic value, but because their value cannot be measured in dollars. Stand against the pillaging of our natural resources and stand for conservation, responsible stewardship, wildlife, Indigenous communities, and the health and safety of the American people.
The decisions made today will determine what remains for tomorrow.
Sincerely,
WE THE PEOPLE.
