I have now submitted a listing application to Historic England (as have Medway Council). I have also applied to have the building listed as an asset of community value. As well as adding another layer of protection this means that the community have a chance to try and buy the pub if the owners decide to sell it in future. The Council has said we need to provide sworn statements to support the evidence of how the pub 'furthered the social wellbeing and social interests of the community'. If you are registered to vote in Medway I wonder if you could be kind enough to write such a statement? I have written an example outline statement below but you can use your own reasons. Please send to josodon@hotmail.com asap Dear Sir/Madam I have used the Royal Oak since XXXX. It has furthered my social well being by XYZ[e.g providing me with a place to meet my friends/ play darts /pool/ eat meals/ get out the house/ Meet new people/ join a sports team.] This need is not served by other local pubs because xyz [too far to walk/different atmosphere/ different community/ too much loud music] The social interests of the community are best served by retaining the Royal Oak as a pub because XYZ# For these reasons I ask Medway Council to list the Royal Oak as an asset of community value. I swear the above is true. Joe Blogs Address email / phone Thanks as ever, Joe
