Moooooh! A field too far I say? For elementary aged students, we have choice as a district as to what is taught and the law allows for that choice. The law also states, no matter what age group, the material and instruction must be age appropriate. The district can decide to teach none of it, or some of it, or all of it (all 11 topics). Now, I don't recommend that we teach none of it, but they do have a choice for "elementary school age children". I think the mind field the district stepped into was one of trying to be politically correct. So, instead of just "Reproduction and Anatomy" (how babies are born), the lesson plan includes "Sexual Anatomy" and this a pile of doo doo. When the district included the "sexual" in the lesson plan (Sexual and Reproductive Anatomy) that is a whole new ball game because when you include "sexual" than you have to bring parity to your program and include every type of "sexual act", not just vaginal intercourse. And, it is why some people in the room this last Monday (July 16th - MDUSD Steering Committee for Sexuality Education Curriculum) were calling for including anal and oral sex because to not do so was "discrimination" towards protected groups. And, since you are describing in detail "vaginal intercourse", then you have to include "anal and oral" intercourse too. See how it works? The question remains whether parents think 10 and 11 year old children need this 'sexual' information included in the lesson plans, or should our lesson plans, simply include just puberty and human reproduction (how babies are born). After all what is the goal of the program for children? A FIELD TOO FAR! Time to take it out! And, it's time parents that you tell this district that this is "NOT AGE APPROPRIATE MATERIAL" and that our district has gone too far afield. This is the mine field and if YOU don't start really letting your voice be known, then that is exactly where this material is going and it's going to include anal and oral sex too. Just wait though, for 7th grade, that's when they have real treat for you. I'll be posting some of the 7th grade program for your eyes only in the coming weeks. Speak and share before it's too late.
