1John

(1:5-2:29)

Walking In The Light

1:5 This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light, in him there is no darkness at all.

1:6 If we claim to have fellowship with him yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live by the truth.

1:7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from alla sin.

Is. 2:5; John 3:19-21

Come, O house of Jacob, let us walk in the light of the LORD.

Is. 60:1

‘’Arise, shine, for your light has come,

Ps. 36:9

For with you is the fountain of life;

Ps. 87:7

As they make music they will sing,

Ps. 149:3

Let them praise his name with dancing

Ex. 15:20

Then Miriam the prophetess, Aaron’s sister, took a tambourine in her hand, and all the women followed her, with tambourines and dancing; and make music to him with tambourine and harp.

Ps. 57:8

Awake, my soul! Awake, harp and lyre! I will awaken the dawn. ‘’All my fountains are in you,’’ in your light we see light and the glory of the LORD rises upon you.

Ex. 16:7

and in the morning you will see the glory of the LORD, because he has heard your grumbling against him. Who are we, that you should grumble against us?’’ This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God.’’e

1:8 If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us.

1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.

1:10 If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word has no place in our lives.

Prov. 20:9; 1John 5:10

Who can say, ‘’I have kept my heart pure;

Job 15:14

‘’What is man, that he could be pure, or one born of woman, that he could be righteous? I am clean and without sin’’?

1Kin. 8:46

‘’’When they sim against you—for there is no one who does not sin—and you become angry with them and give them over to the enemy, who takes them captive to his own land, far away or near; Anyone who believes in the Son of God has this testimony in his heart. Anyone who does not believe God has made him out to be a liar, because he  has not believed the testimony God has given about his Son.

2 My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have one who speaks to the Father in our defense—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One.

2:2 He is atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also forb the sins of the whole world.

Ro. 3:25; 1Tim. 2:5

a7 Or every; e7 Some interpreters end the quotation after verse 15; b2 Or He is the one who turns aside God’s wrath, taking away our sins, and not only ours but also.

God presented him as a sacrifice of atonement,a through faith in his blood. He did this to demonstrate his justice, because  in his forbearance he had left the sins committed beforehand unpunished—For there

is one God and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus,

2:3 We know that we have come to know him if we obey his commands.

2:4 The man who says, ‘’I know him,’’ but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in him.

2:5 But if anyone obeys his word, God’s lovec is truly made complete in him. This is how we know we are in him:

2:6 Whoever claims to live in him must walk as Jesus did.

1John 3:24; 4:12

Those who obey his commands live in him, and he in them. And this is how we know that he lives in us: We know it by the Spirit he gave us.

1John 4:13, 15

We know that we live in him and he in us, because he has given us of his Spirit. If anyone acknowledges that Jesus is the Son of God, God lives in him and he in God. No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us.

2:7 Dear friends, I am not writing you a new command but an old one, which you have had since the beginning. The old command is the message you have heard.

2:8 Yet I am writing you a new command; its truth is seen in him and you , because the darkness is passing and the true light is already shining.

2:9 Anyone who claims to be in the light but hates his brother is still in the darkness.

2:10 Whoever loves his brother lives in the light, and there is nothing in himd to make him stumble.

2:11 But whoever hates his brother is in the darkness; he does not know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded him.

Lev. 19:17; John 11:9; 1John 3:14

‘’ ‘Do not hate your brother in your heart. Rebuke your neighbor frankly so you will not share in his guilt.

1John 2:9

Anyone who claims to be in the light but hates his brother is still in the darkness. Jesus answered, ‘’Are there not twelve hours of daylight? A man who walks by day will not stumble, for he sees by this world’s light. We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love our brothers. Anyone who does not love remains in death.

2:12 I write to you, dear children, because your sins have been forgiven on account of his name.

2:13 I write to you, fathers, because you have known him who is from the beginning.

John 1:1

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. I write to you, young men, because you have overcome the evil one. I write to you, dear children, because you have known the Father.

2:14 I write to you, fathers, because you have known him who is from the beginning.

John 1:1

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. I  write to you, young men, because you are strong, and the word of god lives in you, and you have overcome the evil one.

Do Not Love The World

2:15 Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.

2:16 For everything in the world—the cravings of sinful man, the lust of his eyes and the boasting of what he has and does—comes not from the father but from the world.

2:17 The world and its desires pass away, but the man who does the will of God lives forever.

Ro. 12:2; James 4:4

a2 Or as the one who would turn aside his wrath, taking away sin; c5 Or word, love for God; d10 Or it.

Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.

1John 2:15

Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father I not in him. You adulterous people, don’t you know that friendship with the world is hatred toward God? Anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God.

Warning Against Antichrists

2:18 Dear children, this is the last hour; and as you have heard that the antichrist is coming, even now many antichrists have come. This is how we know it is the last hour.

2:19 They went out from us, but they did not really belong to us. For if they had belonged to us, they would have remained with us; but their going showed that none of them belonged to us.

2:20 But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and all of you know the truth.a

2:21 I do not write to you because you do not know the truth, but because no lie comes from the truth.

2:22 Who is the liar? It is the man who denies that Jesus is the Christ. Such a man is the antichrist—he denies the father and the Son.

2:23 No one who denies the Son has the Father; whoever acknowledges the Son has the Father also.

John 8:19; 2Pet. 1:12

Then they asked him, ‘’Where is your father?’’

John 16:3

They will do such things because they have not known the Father or  me. ‘’You do not know me or my Father,’’ Jesus replied. ‘’If you knew me, you would know my Father also.’’ Grace and peace be yours in abundance through the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord.

2:24 See that what you have heard from the beginning remains in you. If it does, you also will remain in the Son and in the Father.

2:25 And this is what he promised us—even eternal life.

2:26 I am writing these things to you about those who are trying o lead you astray.

2:27 As for you, the anointing you received from him remains in you, and you do not need anyone to teach you. But as his anointing teaches you about all things and as that anointing is real, not counterfeit—just as it has taught you, remain in him.

1Cor. 2:12; 1John 3:7

We have not received the spirit of the world but the Spirit who is from God, that we may understand what God has freely given us. Dear children, do not let anyone lead you astray. He who does what is right is righteous, just as he is righteous.

Children Of God

2:28 And now, dear children, continue in him, so that when he appears we may be confident and unashamed before him at his coming.

Col. 3:4; 1John 3:2

When Christ, who is yourb life , appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.

Ro. 6:5; Gal. 2:20

If we have been united with him like this in his death, we will certainly also be united with him in his resurrection. I have been crucified with Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. Dear friends, now we are children of god, and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when he appearsa we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is.

2:29 if you know that he is righteous, you know that everyone who does what is right has been born of him.

1John 3:7

Dear children, do not let anyone lead you astray. He who does what is right is righteous, just as he is righteous.
