The Future of Family Engagement in MCPS

Protecting and restoring the Family Engagement Specialists (FESs) in Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) in Maryland is vital for the families who rely on their support daily. These specialists are crucial in bridging gaps between schools and the diverse communities they serve, ensuring that every child gets a fair chance at success.  Recent budget decisions have put these critical FES positions in jeopardy.  MCPS plans to eliminate 16 FES positions by the end of this fiscal year 2026 as a cost-saving measure.  This decision would leave thousands of families without the essential support they rely on to effectively engage with their children’s education. For our MCPS Focus Families (Strategic Plan 2025-2030), especially those who are immigrants, have students with disabilities, economically disadvantaged students, multilingual learners, Hispanic/Latino students and Black or African American students, FESs are more than just a resource, they are a bridge and most importantly a lifeline to understanding and participating in the education system.

Without these specialists, families risk being isolated from meaningful participation in their children’s education. Family Engagement Specialists provide the necessary guidance and support to caregivers who might otherwise feel alienated by complex school systems. They actively work to involve caregivers in decision-making processes, ensuring an inclusive approach to education that values every voice.

According to recent studies, engaging families in education significantly enhances student performance and well-being. When families understand the intricacies of the school system and feel invited to participate, their children are more likely to succeed academically. FESs serve as essential conduits to this engagement, helping caregivers assist their children in reaching their fullest potential.

It’s estimated that nearly 20% of the families in our district consist of non-native English speakers or are new to the educational framework in the United States. For families, navigating school systems without guidance can be daunting. FESs provide support that is culturally sensitive, enabling families to feel part of the community and informed about their children’s education.

The elimination of these 16 positions sends a message that undermines the importance of family involvement in education, especially in high-needs schools. By reinstating the Family Engagement Specialist positions, MCPS would demonstrate its commitment to inclusive and equitable education, which benefits everyone within the community.

We cannot let budget cuts compromise the educational experience of our students or the support that our families depend upon. We urge the MCPS Board to reconsider this decision and reinstate all 16 FES positions.

We call upon all community members, caregivers, and advocates of education to sign this petition. Together, we can ensure that all families, regardless of their background, have the support they need to help their children succeed. Your signature is a step towards maintaining equity in our schools and ensuring every child succeeds. Please sign this petition today and make a difference in our community’s future.
