Today, news comes out that the Quebec government will shut down every school (including university) for two weeks, starting next Monday.
In retrospect, we realize that at the end of the day, no matter what happens, our administrators and we the students are on the same side trying to do the right thing. Not everyone on our university leadership supports the most drastic measure, but that doesn’t mean they don’t care about us. Making decisions pertaining to an institution of more than 45,000 people involves a lot of intricacies that we as outsiders may never be able to fully understand.
Maybe they heard about our petition and took the mounting public pressure into consideration as they are deciding on the one-day cancellation. Maybe they didn’t take us seriously, except as an annoying nuisance. But that doesn’t matter, because this petition shows exactly what makes us the McGill community. We might have a lot to say about the administration or SSMU, probably not compliments, but when it comes to caring about each other, we will always be there. Many people signing the petition are not doing it for themselves, but for someone they know, someone they love.
It is easy to start or sign a petition, but the real challenge has just started: What are we going to do from now on.
I don’t know, but let’s find out together. In the meantime, DON’T be racist, don’t panic, don’t overwhelm yourself with social media, don’t stockpile toilet paper or any other essential supplies. DO Call your loved ones and support each other (while maintaining social distancing), take a break from the news feed, practice mindfulness, and...just breathe…
We’ll get through it.
McGill, take care.
