So, I've found that some of my fellow Bellinghammers are understandably confused about the net-neutrality stance of many of our providers. This is probably because the anti-net neutral providers intentionally make it confusing. The big telecoms are trying to keep attacking our 1st amendment rights in the background, while making you think in the foreground that they care about net-neutrality when they DO NOT. Of course we shouldn't trust any of the telecoms that were against net-neutrality like Comcast, Verizon, CenturyLink, AT&T, etc. ever again but I thought I should clear something up. CenturyLink posted a statement that if read to fast may confuse you into believing that they're net-neutral. Again, they're NOT! Let me post and then pick apart the statement. "CenturyLink, another access provider, says they are in favor of net neutrality, complete and utter freedom with no regulation where business can control the net as they will." Make sure you pay attention to the last part, "where business can control the net as they will." This is a definite anti-net neutrality statement. They are saying that businesses, instead of the FCC on behalf of the people, should control how data flows on the internet. This puts the interests of any business above that of any citizen! So please, don't be confused by it. They are clearly anti-net neutrality. Again, without a expanded public fiber network most Bellinghammers will only have access to anti-net neutral (aka anti-first amendment) providers. The full article is in the update's link, and includes Comcast's equally confusing, yet anti-net neutral statement. Note: The article tries to remain neutral and simply explain the situation objectively. I've included it because it lists most of the official statements from most of the telecoms we have here. There is no good reason we have to tolerate this. Fiber is the backbone to a modern city, will give us more choice, and is not expensive. Tell your council members, neighbors, mayor, and anyone else that cares about the 1st amendment that we need a Dig Once Policy, access to our existing resources, and that we need to dump the big telecoms that have proven time and time again that they don't care about our shared values as American citizens. Besides, don't you want to do business with local net-neutral providers that actually live in and care about the town you live in, at a lower cost than you pay now with the big telecoms, for even better service? Imagine, never having to get taken advantage of by Comcast, Verizon, CenturyLink, AT&T, etc. again. It's not that hard or expensive to do. Time for public fiber!
