A demolition application is being heard by Community Council on February 24th, 2021.

127 Strachan Avenue has sat at the southeast corner of Adelaide Street West and Strachan avenue virtually unchanged since 1878. The Second Empire style building was commissioned by grocer John H. Meyers and designed by prominent Scottish-Canadian architect David Brash Dick. Dick built extensively throughout Toronto, designing institutional, commercial, ecclesiastical, and residential buildings which shaped much of early Toronto’s built landscape. 127 Strachan Ave. is one of the architect’s earliest designs. 

The building has gone through many iterations of businesses, most recently in a slew of bars and restaurants serving as a local community hub for the neighbourhood and Trinity Bellwood park goers. It is currently home to Pennies (previously Bronco’s), serving up cheap drinks and eats with a welcoming patio.  

Contextually, 127 Strachan is one of the oldest surviving buildings in this area, and is directly north of the Palace Arms, another heritage building which is also at risk of demolition to make way for a condo development.
