FurFree Toronto

FurFree Toronto
The Issue
We are calling upon the City of Toronto to introduce a city-wide ban to prohibit the sale and manufacture of products such as coats, other items of clothing, shoes, handbags and trinkets that are made in whole or in part of fur. Please help us reach our goal by signing this petition.
The unjust and violent use of fur-bearing animals has no place in a civilized society. Let's join the many cities, countries and regions already banning fur - let’s show that Canadians believe that animals deserve better.
CANADIAN FUR FARMING
Recent investigations into the Ontario fur farm industry have revealed shocking animal neglect and cruelty at fur farms. Footage shows dead and injured animals, cages covered in excrement, and behavior. Natural instinctive behaviors like swimming and burrowing are impossible, giving way to stereotypical pacing and cannibalism. These beautiful animals, such as fox, mink, chinchilla, and rabbit are brutally killed by anal electrocution or gassing, which will often fail, resulting in the animal’s necks being crudely broken.
TRAPPING
With the introduction of brands like Canada Goose, coyotes and other wild animals across North America are under siege. The public are being deceived by the claim that the animals are treated humanely. Wild-caught animals and other non-target animals such as companion dogs are caught in painful leghold traps, or suffer strangulation when caught by their necks in snare traps. They can suffer for days, and meet a terrifying death, as the trapper comes close for the kill.
IMPORTED FUR
Several brands of popular coats sold in Toronto use “Raccoon Dog” fur. Journalists from the UK travelled to Asia to witness raccoon canines being dragged from their cages and clubbed to death, sometimes being skinned while still alive.
Foxes, used for trim on popular coats such as Moose Knuckles, suffer terribly on Finnish fur farms. Footage shows extremely obese animals with severe eye infections, heavily folded skin and badly malformed feet.
Cat and dog fur is still being imported to Canada. Videos from other countries have captured terrified animals being stolen from neighbourhoods, being tied up, and brutally tortured for their fur.
CANADA - A NATION OF ANIMAL LOVERS?
Doesn’t everyone consider themselves an animal lover? A poll conducted by Environics (2015) showed that 92% of Canadians are in favour of better animal protection laws. Forcing animals to be in a state of distress is a violation of the OSPCA Act. A poll conducted by the Humane Society International (2014) showed 68% of Canadians support a ban on fur farming. Many Canadian retailers have fur-free policies in place. Many prominent international fashion houses are also refusing to use fur in their lines.
FUR BANS
Fur is the product of violent animal exploitation and belongs nowhere. Numerous countries and regions have already passed bans on leg-hold traps, fur farming and/or the import and selling of cat and dog fur, such as the United Kingdom, Serbia, Luxembourg, Austria, Croatia, Japan, Belgium and Norway. In Germany and Switzerland, the regulations for fur farming are very strict, with the result that there are no fur farms.
Fur Free Toronto respects the culture and traditions of indigenous communities. One of the most common myths perpetuated by the fur industry is that they play an integral role in supporting indigenous communities across Canada.
