Alas, those South Texas Confederate supporters never quit! They scheduled an event Saturday (January 19) in Brownsville, near the Jefferson Davis plaque at Washington Park, to honor local Confederate Rip Ford and anyone else who fought for the Confederacy. The event was called Confederate Heroes Day, with Ford with local connections ever prominent.

Ford does not deserve any honor, anymore than Davis. They chose to fight for the continuation of slavery. Remember, and even study, their misguided efforts — though certainly full of bravery — and then scream that they were "wrong, wrong, wrong," as the Civil War was nearly entirely about the matter of slavery continuing in the United States.

Ford and Davis, along with other high-ranking Confederates, were able to get hundreds of thousands of young Southerners (white) to join their cause under the guise of states' rights and freedom. Sad, sad. Misplaced devotion and loyalty.

I close with: "Black Lives Matter." And, the United States is still far short of the promises of Reconstruction.

Drop your Confederate fascination, folks, and work for a color-blind nation.
