Protesters said that line of thinking leaves out the role of slavery in the Civil War and the legacy of white supremacy it left behind.

“ We think it’s important to put this into context,” Ofelia Alonso, of the Texas Freedom Network, said. “This celebration stamps away part of Confederate history where they wanted to keep slaves.”
