It has come to our understanding that the opposing side is threatening to sue the city if the monument is moved. The University of Texas at Austin was sued and the Confederate groups lost. The city of New Orleans was recently sued and the Confederates lost, too. I invite you to read this article:

It seems that several old timers who work or serve on the board of the Brownsville Historical Society are out of touch with the current values of the United States in the year 2016. They will continue blocking our efforts. Not all BHA employees/members insist on "honoring" the Confederacy. Two in particular feel that the museum would be a better place to house this monument. It would serve as a learning tool there. I won't mention their names unless you ask me to. One of these two gentlemen serves in a leadership position for the city.
The CEO of the Sombrero Festival also feels that the museum would be better. He feels that the time for honoring Confederate leaders has passed. He also expressed his sentiment about what the monument represents today.
The monument has already been moved once, so its historical value has already been altered. Moving it one last time will not affect it integrity.
I thought about speaking in front of the city commission during public comment. I'm afraid that if I do, several will use this as an opportunity to turn it into a circus. Many young activists want to take other actions, like bringing in the media. I'm telling them to try peaceful ways of finding a solution. We're not asking to destroy this monument. We would like it to serve as a learning tool in the right setting. As it stands, it serves as a shrine to a person who did not see African-Americans and mestizos (most of Brownsville residents) as equals or even as humans.
Please don't let Neo-Confederate bullies decide what is best for our city. If you would like to speak to us in private, let me know. We are doing our best to improve the quality of life in Brownsville and our standing with the rest of the United States. Embarrassingly, we are the laughing stock of historical scholars when it comes to the Civil War. We "won" the last battle after Robert E. Lee had already surrendered. Let's not give the Confederates a chance to "win" again. We are making history at the moment. Now, when someone Googles "Jefferson Davis Brownsville", our cause appears. As it stands, it looks like the city has bowed down to these Confederate sympathizers. Let's change the results and do what UT and New Orleans have done. These Neo-Confederates don't have a chance in court. Brownsville deserves to be on the right side of history this time.
Thank you
Antonio Castillo
