Save Community Sport - Save Bunnerong Gymnastics!

The issue

Randwick City Council is planning to demolish the current gymnastics building at Heffron Park and replace it with a facility that will not meet the community’s current or future gymnastics needs.

The new facility will be inadequate because the gymnastics area will be effectively reduced by one-third, due to the space required for modern equipment and best practice safety requirements.

Bunnerong Gymnastics, a not for profit community association, has been providing outstanding school, recreational and competitive gymnastics programs for boys and girls in the Randwick community and surrounds for the last 40 years (33 at Heffron Park).

If Randwick City Council goes to tender with its current plan for the inadequate 1,300m2 facility, there will be a reduction in equipment in the new centre, meaning Bunnerong competitive gymnasts may have nowhere to train and the already growing waitlists for families will increase, with more children missing out.

We the undersigned strongly urge Randwick City Council:

  1. Not to proceed with the tender process, and instead
  2. Work in partnership with Bunnerong Gymnastics and allow them to contribute funds they have raised to build a community-owned gymnastics facility; and together with Gymnastics NSW and other key stakeholders, deliver a 2,300m2 purpose-built regional gymnastics facility (as per the 2009 Heffron Park Plan of Management) at no extra cost to Randwick City Council. This will ensure the best outcome for our community.
