I want to take time to come on here and say Thank you for 1,178 signatures! The support is so incredible.
I want to acknowledge some of my goals coming into this and goals for the future of Miami-Dade. And with that encourage you all to keep sharing, and remaining active. We will now be making updates to release when any goal is reached!
- We wanted Doral Academy Prep. to take accountability for the issue stated and for the multiple issues reported by students that they have yet to speak on. ( Today, August 12, They released on Facebook and Instagram Stories, statements taking accountability. Yes stories only last 24 hrs and we acknowledge that but it's a start.)
- We are pushing for proper consequences for the student, in the video repeating the slurs and the cheer coach who verbally threatened students, minors without their parents present into removing posts relating to the movement.
- In the long run we are going to aim to get in front of the school board to input anti-racism education into the curriculum. The same way every year we are required to learn about "the parts of our body" in school, is the same exact way we can implement anti-racism education to our schools. Being such a diverse community this benefits all students by educating them on becoming Allies to one another.
We have to remember, as a community, that this is not just a Doral Academy problem. We're just starting here. Racism is an underlying problem in our world. It is time to plant fresh seeds of knowledge into the growing, evolving minds of young children, and teachers, counselors, and school officials need to do their parts in nurturing them so that in the future we build a better society. Racism should never be a political issue, but a matter of human decency.
