Add Space for Seniors, Families, and Children During Pandemic--Fix Dalecarlia Parkway
The Issue
In the interest of public health, the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) should immediately implement its plan to add pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure to the Dalecarlia Parkway. I often run up and down Massachusetts Ave. NW, and I have seen an increase in exercising and walking in our neighborhoods—which is a great thing! Data from Google agrees and shows a "personal mobility" surge of 17 percent in DC's residential neighborhoods. The added stress on sidewalks and our limited pedestrian pathways in our neighborhoods makes it incredibly difficult to maintain a 6-foot distance away from our neighbors without walking into traffic.
At Westmoreland Circle, Massachusetts Ave. NW intersects with Dalecarlia Parkway, but unlike Massachusetts Ave. NW, the Dalecarlia Parkway has absolutely no sidewalks, which puts it out of compliance with our city’s rules. Today, there is no way for families, children, seniors, or anyone on foot to enjoy this one-mile long road. What’s more, the four-lane Dalecarlia Parkway is significantly underutilized by vehicles.
Because of the underutilization, DDOT has a ready-to-go, pedestrian-friendly plan to implement a pathway which meets the needs of all DC residents. This pathway will allow families, seniors, strollers, runners, and others additional space to enjoy the outdoors. The plan also includes a separated, protected space for bicyclists, so they no longer will have to fear vehicles speeding by them over the 40mph posted speed limit. And it leaves more than enough space for vehicles to continue to use the parkway without any issues. It’s a win-win-win.
To improve public health, please sign this petition to encourage DDOT to implement its plan to add much-needed pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure to the Dalecarlia Parkway. This pathway would provide essential space for families, seniors, children, and others to exercise and to enjoy the outdoors during this unprecedented time.
