Stop euthanasing Rockhampton's impounded animals

The issue

Rockhampton Regional Council does not have an adoption or rehousing program in place for the animals that are impounded or surrendered to the pound facility. Council relies on charity organisations to facilitate any rehousing that takes place, but when an organisation is unable to take an animal, it is euthanased. In 2014-2015, over 2700 cats and dogs were impounded, with more than half being euthanased. Approximately 800 were reclaimed, but only 520 were transferred to rescue groups. Council facilitated 0 direct adoptions. The residents of Rockhampton want council to immediately reinstate their adoption program, to allow for rehousing of animals, to stop placing the burden of care on charitable organisations and to stop using euthanasia to manage population and workloads.
