Good day, this morning I met with the Office of the Chief Administrative Officer at the City of North Vancouver (CNV).
I was met with respect, compassion and understanding. It was made clear that I was representing not just myself but also the tenants of the Briars.
The goal of the meeting, was to express in person the concerns and struggles that the tenants of the Briars, have experienced over the last 11+ years.
Also to build a bridge with the CNV, that we work together to find positive solutions for people effected by the construction activities.
We spoke about policies that are in place already. The possibility of creating new practices to help tenants: relocate, gain mental health support and be heard by the CNV. It is important that developers understand the impact that construction has on neighbours.
One of my biggest questions was, what happens when our building comes down?
An initiative already in place is the Residential Tenant Displacement Policy that can be found here: https://www.cnv.org/-/media/city-of-north-vancouver/documents/housing/residential-tenant-displacement-policy-2021.pdf
As of now, there is no current plan to redevelop the Briars property.
It was expressed by CNV that the city is under big changes and the construction activities will not end any time soon. As we all know, the city, province and country has faced a housing crisis for decades. So there is obviously incentive/need to build.
CNV is also prioritizing new developments that use different techniques to speed up the build time while lowering the impact on the community. Such as less concrete and more prefab timber structures.
Moving forward, I will be on a list of contacts and updated when any new proposals for development come through. The CNV stated that the best time to let developers know how you feel is at the meetings prior to the start of a project. I will find where these meetings are posted and share with you.
I stated that tenants/neighbours have gone to these meetings prior to the Millennium project and felt unsafe. The solution to this would be attending online, anonymously or having security available so citizens do feel safe to express themselves.
Overall, I believe it was a positive step forward to create a relationship with CNV.
Once some of the additional questions are answered and resources provided, I will be sharing here with you.
My goal is to create positive change and support my neighbours who have been affected by construction.
If you have any comments, concerns or need to share your experience with the CNV please use this email: thebriarsalliance@gmail.com I will do my best to move them forward and represent for our community. Your voice is important.
Thank you for the support thus far. Don't give up.
