Change Vancouver's Racist Street Names

Change Vancouver's Racist Street Names
The Issue
Help sign this petition to change the street names of Vancouver's most notorious racists!
Here is a great article by Emma Renaerts titled Oh No, My Street’s Named after a Racist! https://thetyee.ca/Opinion/2019/05/23/Racist-Street-Names/
There are 4 main streets that we will begin with, but there are an astounding number of schools, streets, parks, buildings, and public places named after dead white racists.
- Trutch Street, Vancouver BC
- Paton Street, Vancouver BC
- Laurier Avenue, Vancouver BC & Sir Wilfrid Laurier Elementary School (7350 Laurel St, Vancouver, BC V6P 3T9)
- Macdonald Street, Vancouver BC
With the Black Lives Matter protests happening around the world we are seeing statues of slave traders being removed, Vancouver it is your turn to make changes.
Let's not forget we are on Indigenous land, Canada you are not innocent. What message does this send to people, knowing the history behind these names.
I am also calling upon the Vancouver School Board as the majority of their Elementary and High Schools are named after these colonizers.
What can we do?
Anyone is welcome to submit naming requests, which then make their way to the Civic Asset Naming Committee, a citizen advisory committee of City Council. Renaming suggestions have a few more additional steps, which are outlined here (scroll down to the bottom of the page for the City’s renaming policy): https://vancouver.ca/your-government/criteria-for-names-on-the-name-reserve-list.aspx
Information on the overall process is here: https://vancouver.ca/your-government/how-city-assets-are-named.aspx
Please note that City Council can only approve names for assets owned by the City; it has no jurisdiction over the names of School Board or Park Board assets. Each of those agencies have their own naming policies and procedures and would need to be approached directly.
We do not honour these bigots, they are not our leaders, we want them gone, we can do better!
All my relations, ǧíǧiáxsix̌a (thank you)
