Thunder Bay Water Watch
Oct 28, 2015
Hello Water Watchers!
There is a fair bit of information to share as a way to catch up since the meeting in Sept. This site will be contiune to be updated over the next few days .
You may recall, when I originally heard about and was distressed by the quiet plan to add sodium hydroxide into our water, I was encouraged by a contact in the city, to elicit citizen action with the hope that our protest would alert the Ministry of Environment (MOE) to consider Thunder Bay's unique situation and to stop this from proceeding. The expert also expressed that the MOE mandate was unnecessary both as an expense for taxpayers and because our city already has a excellent pH level . It was emphasized that along with other local factors , our specific water quality did not match the conditions to merit such a test.
Many were then surprised at the meeting, to be told that even if all the citizens in the affected area were to sign a petition against this test , that the plan would still proceed. That did take the wind out of my sails. It no longer seemed logical to gather those further signatures as intended. However, as new and questionable details continue to come to light, it is becomes clear that it is important that attention continues to be drawn to this story, city wide and beyond. This will also help to raise increased awareness of the corroding lead pipes and the high lead levels in our water , and to further aid and encourage alternative options , beyond a band aid approach and adding yet more chemicals into our water supply!
Along with submitting the petition, a media release is planned for early November. Please encourage friends to sign this petition , or to sign the physical the petitions found at Kelly's, Skaffs, and Robbins on Hodder Avenue. There are many more signatures on the physical petition than here, but this online site is really useful as information and updates can be relayed to all those interested in staying abreast of this issue.
Keen citizens have formed a group called " Thunder Bay Water Watch." Your participation is welcome!
Most importantly, to each one of you, thank you for caring about our water!
