Support is building among Charleston residents for a Farmer's Market to be located at 1901 Savannah Highway, on property adjacent to the Sofa Superstore Firefighter's Memorial. Until recently the property had been slated to become a towing and impound yard with a controversial access from Pebble Road, a residential street to the rear of the property where residents objected to the proposal. Safety concerns and the inappropriate introduction of and industrial use into the neighborhood prompted many in the neighborhood to attend numerous Planning Commission and City Council meetings to put the brakes on the plan.
Now even the owners of the property are supportive of a collaborative effort between the City and the County to purchase the land and build the Farmer's Market. This is also the perfect opportunity to link the City's West Ashley Bike Path, that runs from the intersection of Wappoo Road all the way through Maryville to the Ashley River and the County's ten mile long West Ashley Greenway, that runs from the Ashley River Bridge District near South Windermere to the Limehouse Bridge on John's Island. The location of the site next to the passive Firefighter's Memorial will give the new Farmer's Market an attractive setting in the midst of what has become an unbroken strip of automobile dealerships and other commercial uses that generally do not support the daily needs of the adjoining neighborhoods. More than half of West Ashley would then have direct pedestrian access to fresh local food without having to get into a car to shop for it.
Charleston County Councilmember, Colleen Condon, said in a post yesterday "This is an ideal location for a community center/farmers market as it is at the Bikeway and Greenway intersection." The synergy that could be created on this site has also generated much interest among cycling groups and advocates for fresh local produce.
To support the Farmer's Market please sign the petition at Change .org. Please also forward this update and link to anyone in the Charleston area who might enjoy having this important public facility in the West Ashley community.
