We had a very interesting meeting this evening at West Ashley High School. The Mayor and City Staff presented a five point plan for the economic redevelopment of West Ashley. All the points were well taken, but there is one important element that is totally missing. The plan, which focuses entirely on business and increasing the commercial tax base, does not address in any way improving the livability, walk-ability and viability of the neighborhoods that physically adjoin these commercial corridors. The cart is being put before the horse. If the redevelopment plan is focused entirely on business interests and not being designed to serve the daily needs of the people of West Ashley, then who does it really serve? It's a good plan, but it's missing a key element...us! Let your council member know how you feel about this. And by the way, if you haven't signed the petition for the West Ashley Farmer's Market, now would be a great time! Charlie
