Save one of the last Intact Huron Wendat village sites in Toronto

The Issue

Help us the residents of Morningside Heights save the natural site at 311 Staines!

"Bought from developers in 2007 for $17.2 million, a controversial sum then, the property bordering the Rouge contains one of the last intact Huron Wendat village sites in Toronto.  The Huron Wendat and other First Nations had asked that the land be kept in a naturalized state."

As such if the significance of this land has been acknowledged, then why do we want to desecrate the area to build a tall structure that will indeed need a strong deep foundation to support it?  Digging into the land will be disturbing the artifacts as well as dishonouring the site as it is believed to be a burial site as well.

The community center that is trying to build there has not obtained community support from the majority of the residents or the Indigenous people prior to commencing the groundwork.

We need support to stop the desecration of land !

John Tory supports this build but at what expense? Can the building not be placed somewhere with no historical significance? Is this the only land we can offer for a community center?

Now especially as covid has put our economy in such debt we should be asking our Provincial and Federal leaders if this is where you want to be spending 40 million dollars.( 20 million from each of the two levels.)

Why do we not question our government spending more? Is it that we are all just uninformed? Is omission not just as as harmful as a lie?

John Tory was on CBC radio saying he will help cut spending and realocate it to where it is needed most.  Does that mean building 2 community centers within 5 kms of each other at this time is considered prudent spending?

We need to speak out and support our neighbours. We are all a community and one does not supercede another.

Please sign our petition and send the councillors and John Tory a message!
