CollegeAvenueIndy.org noticed an October 6th story about IndyCAN registering local residents to vote yes on the upcoming mass transit referendum. IndyCAN seems to believe that the November 8th referendum will improve bus service throughout the City. Does IndyCAN realize that the first priority for "mass transit" is to build the Red Line? According to IndyGo, the Red Line will run 13 miles, north and south on College Avenue and Meridian. Does IndyCAN understand that after the Red Line is built and fails miserably due to high construction and operating costs as well as lack of ridership; it will destroy the taxpayers appetite in the future to build the Blue and Purple lines that their constituents so desperately need. Does IndyCAN realize that the that the Red Line will replace the 17 route that currently runs down College Ave. Does IndyCAN understand that the Red Line will no longer travel south of 38th Street (like the current 17 route does)? Does IndyCAN realize how much the Red Line boondoggle will impact the quality of life for all in Indianapolis? What good is a fancy electric bus when parks, schools, infrastructure, and public services are crumbling. What good is a fancy electric bus when the City is broke and laying off its workers? What good is a fancy electric bus when Indianapolis is the 13th most dangerous city in the United States? Does IndyCAN realize that the properties that will be developed along the proposed Red Line route are in mostly affluent neighborhoods that should not be first priority for redevelopment? Does IndyCAN realize that the Red Line is not a racial issue. It's a socio-economic issue that benefits a few... IndyGo, corporate interests (who aren't paying a dime for mass transit), and developers who will make a fortune at the expense of local taxpayers... whether they are black, brown, yellow or white. Folks, the Red Line is a terrible idea at the wrong time that will disproportionately affect the poor and negatively impact the quality of life for all Indy residents.
