CollegeAvenueIndy.org noticed that on September 26th IndyGo released a request for information ("RFI") regarding the purchase of 13 brand new electric buses to service the College Avenue Corridor. The RFI, published in Mass Transit Magazine, summarizes IndyGo's plans as follows:
"The Indianapolis Public Transportation Corporation (IPTC or IndyGo) seeks to identify qualified Manufacturures for (13) 60’ Electric Propulsion,Articulated, Rapid Transit Buses to service 13.1 mile corridor with 28 stations. Service will operate 20 hours per day, seven days per week, and 365 days per year. Accordingly, IPTC is issuing this Request for Information (“RFI”) to solicit letters of interest."
The request for information should serve as a clear indication of IndyGo's first priority - purchasing 13 brand new electric buses to serve a 13 mile stretch along College Avenue that will further include the construction of concrete medians and bus stations. CollegeAvenueIndy.org again notes that this route is currently served by the IndyGo 17 bus route that carries fewer than 6 passengers (on average) any given time.
Considering the September 20th IndyStar article decrying the growing shortage of police officers, followed by the recent Wall St Journal article naming Indianapolis as the 13th most dangerous city in America, and factoring in Mayor Hogsett's recent announcements about budgetary shortfalls and layoffs; the above mentioned request for information is further evidence of IndyGo's fiscal irresponsibility and bad judgement.
CollegeAvenueIndy.org moreover believes that Indianapolis public transportation can be vastly improved, especially for those who need it most, without purchasing 13 new buses that will serve only College Avenue. IndyGo's first priority should be improving the Blue and Purple lines —38th Street and Washington Street respectively — because that is where the greatest need is.
