An interesting Op-Ed piece in Sunday's IndyStar calls out the iniquity between road subsidies versus mass transit subsidies in Indianapolis. The piece points out (based upon study data) the average IndyGo bus ride is 5.6 miles in length. The local tax subsidy to IndyGo per passenger mile is $0.54. This is projected to increase to $0.84 by 2021 (according to IndyGo’s Marion County transit plan). In contrast, the entire Department of Public Works budget (only a fraction of which is actually spent on streets and bridges) barely comes to $.015 (yes... that's 1.5 cents) per road passenger mile. This seems to imply that the current cost per mile subsidy for mass transit in Indianapolis exceeds the current cost per mile subsidy for road transit by 3,600%. By 2021, this imbalance could increase to 5,600% (assuming we continue spending $.015 per passenger mile on roads). CollegeAvenueIndy.org asks you to keep this in mind when you trash another alloy rim driving over pot holes next spring. Click the link below for access to the above Op-Ed piece.
