Mayor Girtz and Commissioners Fully Fund RTCC Staffing

Mayor Girtz and Commissioners Fully Fund RTCC Staffing
The Issue
UGA Parents for Safety and Security and their nonprofit, SafeD Athens, have been tirelessly advocating for proactive safety and security measures in our community for several years. We have seen firsthand the daunting challenges that arise when the safety of our loved ones and community members is compromised. The Athens Police Real Time Crime Center (RTCC) is poised to be a pivotal addition to our safety infrastructure (over $1 million), with the promise of being fully operational in time for the UGA football season. However, its success hinges on having dedicated staffing around the clock.
Currently, two existing crime analysts, burdened with numerous other responsibilities, have spearheaded the efforts of building out the RTCC. While their dedication is commendable, they are stretched too thin to manage it alone. UGA student interns have also contributed remarkably to the project. Yet, to see this essential initiative to fruition, there is an undeniable need for a full-time, committed team of professionals, to include 4 civilian analysts and one supervisor.
The Athens Clarke County Police Department has identified a minimum funding requirement of $419,000 for full staffing of the RTCC. This is a modest investment for the immense benefits that come with improved safety and responsive crime prevention strategies. This financial commitment will ensure that the center can operate 24/7, providing continuous support and vigilance to keep our community safe.
Mayor Girtz has only budgeted $80,000 for one RTCC analyst in his current recommeded FY26 budget. It is crucial that Mayor Girtz and Commission fund the entire $419,000 request for successful RTCC operations. UGA campus safety and the entire community's safety and well-being depend on it, and we urge local leaders to uphold their promises and responsibility to protect and serve.
Already the RTCC has helped to swiftly resolve over 450 incidents with over a 1,000 cameras integrated into the center. UGA is starting to share more of their cameras with ACCPD RTCC and analysts' time will be even more in demand.
Mayor Girtz in a press conference after the murder of Laken Riley promised to completely staff the RTCC. Please hold Mayor Girtz accountable and show your support for a safer Athens by signing this petition. Together, we can achieve comprehensive and lasting security for all residents. Athens-Clarke County Government fully fund the RTCC staff request in the FY26 budget.
