The vote for Bill Lee's plan to hold the 2024 Republican National Convention in Nashville is on Metro Council's agenda THIS TUESDAY JULY 5TH.
All it takes is a simple majority - 20 of the 39 members - to kill the Convention plan on first reading. We can confirm there are a lot of hard no votes based on info we've received on background, but none of us can take anything for granted.
Here's the text of framework to be voted on. The contract itself indicates Nashville taxpayers would have to foot the bill for security and traffic safety along with personnel for venues & other costs. (We're also thrilled to report a #NoNashvilleGOPConvention resolution from At Large Councilwoman Sharon Hurt appears on the agenda.)
It's a holiday weekend so there'll be absences from the Metro Council meeting. Also abstentions from folks who will be promised basically anything from state and local Republicans as long as they don't vote NO (we'll be watching.) That said we have heard from some Councilmembers who are adamantly opposed to this Convention, but none of us should take anything for granted.
HERE'S CONTACT INFO for Metro Council. They need to hear from those who put them in office, not rich or well connected people who don't live in Davidson County.
Rumors are circulating that TNGOP will look to punish Nashville if we don't go along with their plans, but as we all know they'll punish us no matter what we do. (As one reader sardonically pointed out: What are they going to do? Take away our Congressional district?)
One thing we're reminding today: Nashville and Memphis contribute a truly mammoth proportion of TN's income via sales and other taxes. If you add in all the TN cities with Democratic or left mayors, that number hovers around 80% of the budget (bearing in mind that 40% of TN's budget every year comes from the Feds, largely blue states like California.) Taking away our charter or otherwise meddling with the mechanics of city government could have massive and unforeseen consequences for the state economy.
In other news: Councilman At Large Bob Mendes reports the RNC is looking to purchase POLICE EQUIPMENT in order to host the event. If this doesn't put chills down your spine, it should.
Last year Gov. Lee made national headlines by making various protests a felony. Our 2 cents: He'll let Trump's people run free over our city, then call out the National Guard to quash liberals. (Felons can't vote. That's in large part what this is about.) Bear in mind Trump's 3 percenters and Proud Boys will be staying in Airbnb throughout Nashville neighborhoods, since TNGOP has meddled in common sense regulations the city wanted to proscribe on short term rentals (just one of many such articles.)
Again, Nashville voted for Hillary Clinton by 27 points & Joe Biden by 32. We haven't voted a Republican to Congress, our only partisan countywide office, since Reconstruction in the 1870s. We got a big kick out of this article about the Convention by Nashville Scene's Steve Cavendish, which claims state Republicans believe they can take credit for our city's successes.
Nashville doesn't want this Convention, and we shouldn't have it pushed on us by people who don't live here. Contact your Councilmember TODAY.
Some have let us know they'll be attending Tuesday's Metro Council meeting in person - drop us a line at nashvilleresist@gmail.com or via DM at Twitter.com/NashvilleResist and let us know, and we'll try to put people in touch with each other.
Thanks for your time, and your support. #NoNashvilleGOPConvention
