Hello everybody, first off I want to thank everybody once again for signing this and sharing it with your friends. Over 1,600 signatures in one week is not bad at all. In cases like these, strength in numbers are what is needed to make this happen. I did some more research on how to make this happen , I will explain that but first, here's what I need help with :
Does anyone know if anything was already named in Jimmy's honor?
Are you or someone else that's in support of this residing in the Lower East side's District 2 or on their community board?
Do you have a direct contact for any famous artists or celebrities that may be willing to sign the petition?
Most importantly :
Is anyone willing to volunteer to go down to St Marks Place and pass around a handwritten petition signed only by the residents and businesses there?
Their support is extremely necessary we will not only need a signature, but also their name printed as well as an address.
I will research finding out exactly how many people reside in that area and the number of buildings on that block, which is also important.
So how can we make this happen?
The community board for that District will decide on whether or not to co name the street in honor of Jimmy. I believe they meet twice a month, and I will include the information below. The Manager of the Community Board, Bob Gormley who will get this petition. The city Only re names two streets per year. So although we gained a lot of momentum in a short amount of time, we still need to keep getting people to sign. Again, strength in numbers!
Another person that would be instrumental in making this happen would be the District leader, Carlina Rivera. I will update this so that change.org automatically sends this petition to her office as well and I will provide the link below (with her picture included), so that you can either email or send a handwritten letter to the office stating your support. With the current situation, their office is temporarily closed so it's best not to go down there in person if you're in the neighborhood.
All we ask is that when contacting the office, please be polite and straight to the point. These people are on our side, so there's no need to be confrontational and making it quick will not only be courteous to them, but it'll save you time as well.
Feel free to reach out if you want to pitch in or if you have any questions or ideas. Thank you, Nate
