Hi all,

Unfortunately, it’s looking like the city will suspend composting for the next fiscal year (until at least July 2021).

But as Lenny Kravitz sang, it ain’t over ’til it’s over.

To that end, please continue to share this petition and contact our representatives. I think targeting Mayor Bill de Blasio, Speaker Corey Johnson, and Council Member & Chair of Sanitation Antonio Reynoso will be especially effective.

Here is how you can reach them:

  • de Blasio- fill out this form
  • Johnson- SpeakerJohnson@council.nyc.gov
  • Reynoso- areynoso@council.nyc.gov

Below is an email template.

Please feel free to share any other ideas in the comments.

In soildarity,

Anna

I am writing to ask that you continue funding NYC’s composting programs.

Composting is essential to NYC.

It creates soil health, community, and green jobs.

It prevents food scraps from rotting in landfills, where they then release methane, a greenhouse gas 28x more potent than carbon dioxide.

Under your leadership, NYC has already invested millions of dollars in NYC’s composting programs, to the point where we currently have the country’s largest curbside organics program, which processes 308,600 pounds per day, or 112,639,000 lb per year.

Suspending our composting programs, even if temporarily, will push our city backwards. It will take years, and millions more in educational and marketing resources, for the city’s composting programs to rebuild.

We cannot afford to regress. The climate crisis is already here, and we simply don’t have the luxury of time.

We urge you to continue funding the city’s composting programs.

Respectfully,
