Petition updateSave community space at the St. Monica's siteTantalus Gardens is back before WV District Council

A very brief update for those who are still interested:

Tantalus Gardens is back and seeking approval again to rezone the two lots on Wellington Ave that hold the former St. Monica’s church, and to re-rezone two Nelson Avenue lots recently rezoned for increased density via the Horseshoe Bay LAP.

At the time of the original Tantalus Gardens proposal the Horseshoe Bay LAP (Local Area Plan) was in process - and many asked to wait for the results of the Local Area Plan before making further decisions about the 4 lots associated with Tantalus Gardens.

The Horseshoe Bay LAP is now complete.

Two of the lots associated with the Tantalus Gardens project are within the bounds of the LAP. Two others (on which the former church sits) are outside the bounds of the LAP.

The new plan for Tantalus Gardens again asks that the community space (zoned PA2) be destroyed and replaced by housing, thus negating the boundaries established only two years ago by the LAP process.

Horseshoe Bay is growing quickly and the two lots designated as Public Assembly will be needed for public space (daycare, community space, meeting space etc) as the population increases. If they are lost to a developer now, they will never be regained as public use and no other land or building will be provided in their place.

If you have concerns about this, want to know more or want to have your voice heard you can write to WV Mayor and Council: mayorandcouncil@westvancouver.ca

The first meeting about this matter is before council tonight, February 7th, 2022.
