Traffic Light (240th and 56th, Langley)
The Issue
Dear Mayor Froese and Councillors Arnason, Davis, Ferguson, Kunst, Long, Richter, Whitmarsh and Woodward;
As Township of Langley (TOL), Salmon River Uplands and surrounding area residents, we would like to petition Mayor and Council to prioritize the installation of a traffic light at the intersection of 56th Avenue & 240th Street in this year’s 2020 Budget.
We understand that in this year’s Draft Budget there is only a limited amount to spend on new projects and that there are more identified projects than funds available. As not all of the projects identified as possibilities involve public and road safety, we urge Mayor and Council to strongly support a traffic light at 240th St. & 56th Ave. as a priority for this year over other items not specifically concerning road and public safety.
As Fraser Valley and Metro Vancouver communities continue to grow, Highway 1 is becoming become more and more congested. Many commuters are looking for alternative routes. 56th Avenue is becoming a very popular choice. Crash data obtained from ICBC indicates a total of 36 crashes at the intersection of 56 Ave. and 240th St. for the years 2013-2017 (newest data available). This high number of crashes is unacceptable.
During rush hour times (which include morning, after school and early evening), the intersection has become more and more backed up and difficult to access for those of us who live in the neighbourhood coming on and off of 240th Street. Many school busses also use this route.
As taxpayers and residents of the Township of Langley, we urge Mayor and Council to consider making the traffic light at 240th Street and 56th Avenue a priority for the upcoming 2020 TOL budget and to put the safety of Salmon River Uplands as an utmost priority. Thank you for your consideration.
