At the city Council meeting in December, the council and mayor adopted a new banner policy. Within the new policy, it states that to be considered for either of the 2 placements within Nelson (above Baker street or on the Civic building) banners submissions must be in regards to a community even held by a not-for-profit organization; the event must be in keeping with the Canadian Charter of Human Rights and Freedoms. The banner must not break any laws or bi-laws and it cannot contain a statement of any kind. On one hand, the "Respect Human Life" banner will not be acceptable under the new policy. However, on the other hand, it does not prohibit a banner advertising "Pro-life BBQ" on a certain date. I know many will agree with me that the city's policy is inadequate. I presented by concern to the Committee of the Whole meeting Dec. 18th - I suggested they revisit the policy and ad another clause. My suggestion was that they insured the events being advertised were supported by evidence, social systems and/or laws. In other words, that they not allow a banner that advertises an event that is against what is legal and proven to prevent harm, eg. abortion. I do not know if they will change the policy. I do not know what banners will hang over Baker street moving forward. Time will tell. Thanks for your support in making this issue be heard!
