Once again I want to thank everyone for contacting your Mayor or a city Councillor, writing into the Nelson Star, signing and sharing this petition. I attended the Nelson Council Meeting last night where the policy regarding the banner was voted to be changed. Changes include: no statements in the banner at all, must be focused on an event held by an non-for-profit group and will not be allowed should the banner contradict the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms or any laws or bylaws. I'm not sure if that is enough - I plan to speak at the Council of the Whole meeting on December 18th and ask them to revisit the policy to consider adding a clause that the event on the banner support rather than contradict lawful acts and behaviour. In this case, the banner should not support an anti-abortion or anti-medical assisted death event as these are legal in our province and country. However, the new policy was already voted in with only one opposed (Councillor Daly seemed to voice that he too was concerned the new policy did not go far enough to address this controversial banner). I encourage anyone who is interested to weigh in at the COW. Also, the CBC will be covering the story tomorrow morning on Daybreak. :)
