Maynooth University have decided it’s a good idea to “prioritise” final year students to have on-campus exams. The only thing they would be prioritising by doing this is the risk of their final years health. There are over 4000 covid cases a day in Ireland at the moment. We receive weekly, if not daily emails stating covid cases in our lectures. Our modules have been put online because of the deteriorating covid situation in Ireland, yet we are expected to come into college and risk our own health, and for what? An exam that can be quite adequately placed online. Final year students are not immune. Covid still exists for us. Putting us in the position to be at risk is something the university should never even contemplate. We have been told to work from home, cut down contacts, follow guidelines. Bringing us into the campus will not only go against what we have been told to do, but it could be the reason we might end up having to take 2 weeks out of college, out of our final year, the most important year, to self isolate after being put into a hall with hundreds of students. I know if we had the choice, we wouldn’t want to risk our own health for an exam we could do online.
