Northville’s Board of Education states on its website that two of its primary functions are to set district policy and give leadership to the overarching mission and vision for our schools.  As the board votes on policy and provides leadership during this pandemic, it is crucial that they hold the safety of students and staff as their first priority.  However, Board president Matthew Wilk stated his belief that the pandemic “exists only in falsified statistics shouted on the news without context”.  He also suggested that “we allow schools to reopen and ‘Grandma’ can take the extreme precautions” by wearing a spacesuit to go out and shop.  Several of his tweets further enforce an anti-mask stance in addition to a disbelief in scientific evidence.  Wilk’s statements prove his ignorance regarding the pandemic and the precautions that should be taken in schools to minimize the spread of the virus.  By ignoring facts and advice from health experts, Wilk is putting students, school staff, and the community in danger.  Someone who denies the severity and existence of the Coronavirus should not be in charge or even involved in making decisions regarding it.  In order to ensure informed decision making on the part of Northville’s Board of Education, Matthew Wilk must resign as president.

As a recent Northville High School graduate, I have the safety of my friends and siblings who attend Northville Schools in my best interest.  I worry about the many students and staff with pre-existing conditions who are more vulnerable to becoming seriously ill with Covid.  I also worry about the many friends and family members who may contract the virus from student and staff asymptomatic carriers.  I want my friends and siblings to be as safe as possible while they receive their education, which requires informed and strategic leadership from the Board of Education.  With Matthew Wilk as president, such leadership is impossible.
